Patio roof comparison · Melbourne

The best patio roof depends on what you want it to change.

Clearview, metal, louvered and retractable roofs solve different patio problems.

Use this guide to identify whether your priority is daylight, strong shade, airflow control or open-sky flexibility.

Four patio roof types

Compare rain, daylight, shade and movement.

Use “often chosen for” as a starting point. Final suitability still depends on the measured home and site.

What do you want the new roof to change?

The useful question is not “which roof is best?” It is “which trade-off best matches this patio and the rooms beside it?”

Prioritise strong shade

Steel patio roof

A common fixed-roof option for reliable rain cover and stronger shade, but with less natural light than transparent roofing.

Adjust shade and airflow

Louvered roof

For projects where moving blades and ventilation control are central to the brief.

Open the roof completely

Retractable fabric roof

For open-sky flexibility rather than a permanently fixed roof.

Clearview fit

Is fixed transparent roofing the right trade-off?

Clearview is focused on one outcome: fixed rain cover while retaining more daylight than opaque roofing. It does not open or retract.

Clearview may suit you when
  • Your main need is fixed, long-term rain protection.
  • The patio sits beside a living room, kitchen or dining area where daylight matters.
  • You want the roof to feel visually light and open.
  • You do not need the roof to open or adjust each day.
Another roof type may suit better when
  • Maximum opaque shade is the main priority.
  • You want to open the roof completely.
  • Adjustable blades and airflow control are essential.
  • You need a fully enclosed room rather than an open-sided patio.

01 · Connection & supportHow the roof fits the home

Attachment, span, posts and the existing structure are checked for the measured site.

02 · Water managementHow rain is directed away

Roof fall, integrated guttering, outlet, downpipe and discharge route are planned together.

03 · Project requirementsWhat must be confirmed

Access, engineering and approvals are identified separately where the project requires them.

Common comparison questions

What to confirm before choosing a roof type.

Which patio roof retains more natural daylight?

Clearview uses transparent panels and retains more daylight than a standard solid steel patio roof. Some steel-roof configurations may incorporate translucent inserts, so the final light outcome depends on the complete roof design as well as the measured home. Compare clear and tinted panels.

Can a Clearview patio roof open or retract?

No. Clearview is a fixed transparent roofing system. A louvered or retractable roof may be more appropriate when adjustable shade, airflow control or open-sky flexibility is the priority.

Can Clearview be added above an existing pergola?

Sometimes. Alpoco first reviews the existing structure, spans, connection points, achievable roof fall and drainage path before confirming whether an upgrade is worth progressing.

How much does a Clearview patio roof cost?

Start with Alpoco’s indicative 10 m² planning example, then see which connection, support, drainage and access conditions change the written quote. View the Clearview Price Guide.
